Servogear Hybrid CPP for the World’s First Hybrid Catamarans in Commercial Traffic14.11.2017
Norled AS has ordered two pioneering 24m hybrid catamarans from the Norwegian shipyard GS Marine. Norled has chosen to equip both vessels with a complete plug in hybrid Servogear Ecoflow PropulsorTM solution. This will be the world’s first hybrid catamarans used in commercial traffic.
Naval Architect, Ingebjørn Aasheim, has designed the vessel on behalf of GS Marine. The catamarans will be built in light weight carbon sandwich, and operating at 20 knots.
From January 1st, 2019 the two vessels will be accommodating 86 passengers in two different routes in Røværsambandet, Norway:
1: Haugesund- Røvær: Driving with a hybrid installation.
2: Feøy- Haugesund – Kveitevik: Driving with diesel, prepared to be fitted with a hybrid installation.
Norled AS is one of Norway’s largest ferry and express boat operators. Norled are known for having invested significantly in new types of vessels and eco-friendly technology.
The hybrid catamans will use batteries when driving close to shore. Up to a certain speed, the gearboxes with electro motors will be powered by batteries. The diesel engines will be used to achieve top speed.
The first CPP integrated plug in hybrid solution on the market
"This is a unique project that we are very proud to be a part of. The Servogear installation will be the first completely CPP integrated plug in hybrid solution on the market. The HDE220 hybrid gearbox will have its world premiere on the two Norled catamarans. The new gearbox is built on the well proven technology of the HD220 gearbox, combined with the latest electronic technology", said Otto Pedersen, Servogear Sales & Marketing Director.
Servogear will be delivering the total hybrid propulsion package, with propellers, effect rudders, hybrid gearboxes with electro motors, and the design of the propeller tunnels. The hybrid solution package has been developed in cooperation with Brunvoll Mar-El, where they have designed and will be delivering the control systems, power management and batteries to the project. The development of the equipment is supported by Innovation Norway.
"The operator can choose to drive electrically in city harbours, causing zero local emissions. Compared to a conventional CPP propulsion line, the hybrid solution results in operational cost savings and a lifetime extension for the main engine (TBO). It is also a significant step towards achieving a green vessel profile, reducing NOx and CO2 emissions", Pedersen finishes.
